Apparently, the world has decided to be absolutely stupid and has developed this mentality that black people can’t be racist. Now, I know a lot of you are going to tell me that I don’t get to comment on racism because I’m white and don’t experience racism as much as black people. But I’m going to comment on it anyway.
Since when did everyone decide that being white automatically disqualifies you from speaking about racism? It’s an issue that affects everyone, even white people. Yet, somehow, people have it in their heads that being white means you are privileged and that you do not face discrimination because of your skin color. Boy, have I got a news for you.
Let me tackle this absurd claim of white privilege. So, according to the people of the internet, because I was born white, I am privileged and I get opportunities handed to me. Forget the fact that I worked for the same company for almost two years and put everything into my job before getting promoted to management. No, I only got that promotion because I’m white, right? My being white improved my chances of getting that promotion, right? Or maybe it was the fact that I have the best product knowledge out of anyone who works with me and I took the initiative to go above and beyond to ensure that my higher ups knew that I was dedicated to my job. But none of that actually matters because I’m white. In case you are wondering, these are things people have actually told me and I told them the same thing I’m going to tell all of you now: FUCK THAT LOGIC. Who do you think you are to devalue someone’s hard work because of their skin color? You know, I think there’s actually a word for that. What was it again? Oh, right, it’s called RACISM.
Yes! You can be racist to a white person! Saying my skin color contributed to my promotion is the same thing as saying someone was suspected of stealing because they are black when in fact it’s because they are displaying signs of thievery (I am contractually obligated by my job to withhold details of warning signs of those who steal. Otherwise, I would give examples). IT IS RACIST, OFFENSIVE, AND DOWNRIGHT DUMB. (Side note: I do realize that some people do get suspected of stealing because of their skin color which is racist and completely uncalled for. I am not talking about those instances. I am referring to instances where a person is suspected of stealing because they are exhibiting all of the red flags of someone who does steal and then calls whoever confronts them racist).
And then there’s this thing called “White Tears.” White tears is basically when white people complain about their so called privilege and speak out against racial injustice towards them. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are many people who are very ignorant and complain about the injustice done to them and blame black people for them which is absolutely ludicrous. However, the use of the term “white tears” is commonly used to attack white people who are simply trying to point out that the allegations of white privilege is often drastically over-exaggerated and not quite what everyone makes it out to be. So if you’re planning on telling me that I’m shedding “white tears” on this post, I’m here to tell you that you are an ignorant and you should be ashamed of yourself for using a cop out to discredit me instead of presenting a logical and reasonable response to explain to me why I am wrong.
The next thing: when a black person pretends to be white, it’s funny but as soon as a white person pretends to be a black person, it’s offensive. What’s with the double standard? Why don’t we all just be ourselves instead of trying to get a cheap laugh? I recently saw a video of a black woman painting herself white in response to Donald Trump’s win and saying that she was painting herself white because it is now a white america or some other bullshit like that but when some white woman painted her face black for Halloween to be Aunt Jemina, it’s racist. WHAT?!! HOW IS PAINTING YOUR FACE WHITE BECAUSE YOU CLAIM IT WILL KEEP YOU SAFER IN TRUMP’S AMERICA NOT RACIST? I get it, Trump is a horrible human being who has said a lot of super racist things but that doesn’t give you the right to use race as comic relief. She openly admits that she thinks it’s funny and when black face is brought up, she says that black face was used to make fun of black people in the past and her white face was just a joke. I fail to see how painting your face white to make fun of this white privilege that doesn’t actually exist is any less offensive than black face. If you want to see the video, refer to this facebook post: https://www.facebook.com/ajplusenglish/videos/vb.407570359384477/837799689694873/?type=2&theater¬if_t=video_reply¬if_id=1479335809510989.
In the same video, they mention a guy who pretends to be white on a regular basis and uses phrases like “welcome to my Caucasian home” and actively makes fun of white people based off of the unrealistic stereotype of white privilege. Yet, people don’t think it’s offensive. If you look in the comment section of the video, the majority of the commenters share their support for the girl and her video saying that she is justified in it because she did it to hide her face out of fear for what is to come from trump’s presidency, which I would totally buy into had it not been for the fact that she admitted that this kind of thing is a “running joke.”
Now, I know that a lot of people are going to disagree with me and tell me I’m ignorant and I can’t see my own privilege and what not but I really don’t give care. I completely understand, acknowledge, and actively combat the racism against other people/races. I do see that racism happens towards some races other than others. However, the point I am trying to make is that by telling white people they are privileged because they are white, you are being ignorant and racist. Privilege is more of an economic status kind of thing rather than a race thing. Any “privilege” I get based off of my skin color is the result of other people being bigoted and racist, making it not a privilege, but a result of poor ethical standards. White privilege is not a thing. Unethical people, however, are very real and are getting away with it because you douche bags keep mislabeling it as “white privilege” and ignore that the problem is people being racially biased.
Racism is a serious issue and we all need to do everything we can to stop it. But we wont get anywhere if we continue to focus on the wrong thing and continuously use skin color as a way to make a cheap joke.
